Instagram has officially introduced support for 3:4 aspect ratio photos, allowing users to upload images in their original framing without the need for cropping or adding borders. This update aligns with the default aspect ratio used by most smartphone cameras, enhancing the user experience by preserving the original composition of images.
Previously, Instagram supported square (1:1) and slightly vertical (4:5) aspect ratios, which often required users to crop their photos or add borders to fit the platform's constraints. With the new 3:4 aspect ratio support, photos will now appear exactly as captured, both in single-image posts and carousels.
This change is part of Instagram's ongoing efforts to adapt to modern content creation trends, where vertical orientation is increasingly prevalent for both photos and videos. Earlier this year, Instagram also updated profile grids to accommodate rectangular visuals, moving away from the traditional square layout.
The 3:4 aspect ratio support is rolling out to users and should be available on both iOS and Android versions of the app. Users still retain the option to upload photos in square or 4:5 aspect ratios if they prefer.
